AHHHH I cannot describe how intensely cool this dude is!? LIKE YOU SHOULD TOTALLY WATCH CRIMINAL MINDS. Incase though you are uninterested, just just hear me out okay you should watch the show becaus he is genuinely SUCH a cool character?? Like I can(and have) ramble about him for hours and hours. Like to the point that in seventh grade I had several friends get genuinely mad at me for talking about him too much because it was "annoying" and insensitive or whatever I dont know that was way to long ago but THATS NOT IMPORTANT you know what is important, Spencer Reid. (please keep in mind, all of this is written by my memory without me doing any more research than what I've already done in the past, accuracy may vary.)
Now in criminal minds Reids general character is the stereotypical kid/nerd character. He is the youngest on his team and is an absolute genius. He graduated highschool at age 12, and has an IQ of 187(no I didn't google that, this is just the knowledge that I have) He was so smart that whenever he graduated university he was part of a select group of people that the FBI immediately reaches out to in order to hire because their intellegence renders them too powerful to work anywhere but a government position. He is again the stereotypical kid on the show, he's the youngest and his peers constantly mock him for being young and a kid etc etc.
another trait of Reids is his intense germ phobias. He refuses to shake anybodys hands, hug, share food drinks etc etc and because he is such a brain man who knows every random fact there is to know about everything, he repetively rambles about said germs whenever given the chance or opportunity.Such as his commonly repeated and quoted phrase where he explains that shaking hands is actually more dangerous than it is to kiss(apparently, but he's like never wrong so I'll take his word for it)
also fun fact, bro LOVES to info dump. It's a running trend throughout the show where someone will mention something and since he's a literal genius of course he knows basically everything about it, so he just starts ranting about it for so long and in such detail that they just feel sorry for even asking.
more more more... Reid is like VERY good with other people, notably children and mentally ill unsubs. Reid's backstory and lore is incredibly interesting(more on that later) and a large part of it is that his entire childhood his mother had suffered with intense mental illness that he had to care for from a very young age. Due to this he's become excellent with understanding and sympathizing with the unsubs(unknown suspects ;3) who have mental illnesses, being able to relate to them in a way. He's also great with kids!! In the show they normally send him in to deal with children witnesses or such because he is the youngest on the team, and just looks the kindest. But it goes way deeper than that. I don't want to spoil it tooo much BUT one of his coworkers has a kid who Reid is SO close to. Like the kid went as Reid for halloween once because he loves him so much its absolutely adorable :3
Reids Childhood was intense, and insane. He was born in a mostly happy family EXCEPT NOT ACTUALLY. Reid's mother is/was severely mentally ill during her life and it made existence in the home very difficult. Whenever he was around I believe 8 or 9..? His father got too overwhelmed by Reids mothers issues, that he just left. No warning really, they had been fighting for awhile but he suddenly just split. Packed a bag and left and never(really) saw either of them again. Which on one hand is somewhat understandable, but it left Reid completely alone having to care for his own mother instead of being able to be a kid. The show also hints a lot of more intense terribly sad things in his childhood but I may save those for the spoiler page(if I decide to make it,no promises.)
Theres a LOT more I have to talk about but it is very difficult to go over his character growth over the show without spoiling the entire thing so I may make an entire page deticated to more info about him, but I include whatever spoilers I want to.
